...Know Who You Are Riding With...

Every ride will consist of varying levels of skill and experience. Some riders are familiar with group rides, and some will be rookies. Some riders bring their own attitude, and some adapt to the attitude of the group. Some riders go fast, and others take it slow.

If everyone knows to ride their own ride, the group will sort itself out into small groups within the first half hour or so. During the first few minutes, take it slow so everyone can get rolling.

New riders should be grouped with experienced riders, and either near the front or the back of the group. Give them lots of space. Encourage them to ride at their own pace and to pay attention to the road, and not necessarily the other riders. If a new rider is following you, you have no choice but to assume some responsibility for them. Communicate your intentions clearly, make changes smoothly, and flash your brake light when slowing. Set your corner entry speeds at rookie level. Do not spend too much time looking in the mirrors.

Like everything else, note that which is out of the ordinary. Unusual riding style or behavior, bizarre clothing, hairstyle, or speech, or protective gear that is vastly different than the group’s usually implies a different attitude toward riding. There is nothing wrong with that, but be aware that not everyone will adapt easily to a group ride.

If a rider endangers anyone else on the ride, whether it is purposeful or simply inconsiderate, do not hesitate to call attention to it and ask that rider to either stop it immediately or leave the group.
